Drunk, Defiant Students Won't Be Suspended or Expelled Under New California Bills

Two bills pending before the California Legislature would bar school officials from suspending or expelling students who are drunk or high, or who engage in what's known as "willful defiance" at school.

Illinois Lawmaker Proposes Lowering State's Legal Drinking Age

A northern Illinois lawmaker has proposed legislation that would lower the state's minimum drinking age
The bill, proposed by Freeport Rep. John Cabello, was introduced on Friday in the state legislature.

Kentucky House passes tax break for bourbon industry

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- A proposed tax break for Kentucky's bourbon makers was fast-tracked Monday in advancing in the state House, but local leaders living near some of the world's best-known distilleries were in no mood to toast the industry victory.

What Is a Spirit Cooler, and Why Are Liquor Stores Ready To Fight Them?

Texas law has long regulated access to hard liquor. Grocery and convenience stores can sell only wine and beer. For the good stuff (say, tequila or bourbon), you have to head to a proper liquor store, which are closed on Sundays by the state's blue laws.

Bill would extend alcohol shipping to local breweries

SANTA FE, N.M. - Fans of wine delivery clubs may soon have more options for getting alcohol shipped right to their front doors, especially if you are a beer lover. 

House Bill 364 will allow local breweries to ship beer directly to customers.

Democratic Lawmakers in New Mexico Pushing for Alcohol Tax

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- Democratic lawmakers in New Mexico are pushing for a flat 25-cents-a-drink tax to combat the state's alcohol death rate, which is the highest in the country and nearly twice the national average.
The legislation survived its first committee Friday, advancing on a 6-4 vote.
