    Australian beer tax: calls to scrap August increase in alcohol levy

    It seems un-Australian, but has been going on for decades - every six months the amount of tax we pay for beer goes up.  That means on August 3 it will be going up again, despite calls from the Brewers Association of Australia and Australian Hotels Association to freeze the rate because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Britons have taken full advantage of their first chance in more than three months to have a pint at a pub. Dubbed Super Saturday, restaurants, bars and hairdressers welcomed customers, but it was the vast number of people filling the streets after a few drinks that had some authorities concerned.

    The "Protection of Workers Bill" has been passed at Stage 1 by Holyrood's Economy committee. Staff who sell age restricted goods are deemed to have have a "special role in upholding the law, but the committee heard in evidence that this can sometimes trigger violence and abuse.

    (Mainichi Japan) "Strong" level chuhai (shochu highball) alcoholic drinks with a typical alcohol by volume (ABV) of around 7 to 9% have quickly become huge sellers in Japan, and while demand for other alcoholic drinks such as beer continues to shrink, they have become market-leading products.
