Terrance Merriweather will lead initiatives designed to advance policy, health, and safety priorities that support control jurisdiction

ARLINGTON, VA (FEBRUARY 21, 2023)— Terrance Merriweather has been hired as the Director, Public Policy, for NABCA and will oversee policy, governmental affairs, research, data surveillance and programmatic initiatives that support control jurisdictions and members as well as manage the Education and Supplemental awards programs.

 

Merriweather will engage with key stakeholders and NABCA partners that are associated with researching the impact of alcohol use and misuse, to include public health and law enforcement associations, institutions of higher education, and groups allied to the beverage alcohol industry. He will also liaise with the Education Advisory and the Public Health Advisory committees and interact with NABCA’s diverse membership to bring awareness to industry trends, best practices and ever-changing business and regulatory standards. 

 

With 30 years of experience with the state of North Carolina, Merriweather served as the Deputy Commissioner for the ABC Commission (NC ABC) before retiring on September 1, 2022.  Previously, he was the Deputy Director of Policy where he oversaw the Permit, Audit/ Investigation, and Legal Section of the NC ABC to include being the law enforcement liaison.  

He began his career in 1997 as a deputy sheriff with the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office. He continued as a deputy sheriff with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.  In 2003, he was hired by the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, and in 2017 became the Branch Head of the Division. In these roles, his responsibilities included connecting to the community and students as a School Resource Officer.

Merriweather is a United States Army Veteran. His undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree is in Criminal Justice, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from Liberty University. He attended Boston University’s Senior Management Institute of Policing, which focused on organizational leadership. Additionally, he has other enforcement certifications that include Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, North Carolina Criminal Justice General Instructor Certification and North Carolina Deputy Sheriff Certification.

“I feel grateful for my career and community experiences that have shaped and influenced me,” said Merriweather. “In my role as policy director, I look forward to using what I have learned to work with everyone here toward fulfilling NABCA’s mission of protecting public health and safety and ensuring responsible and efficient systems for beverage alcohol distribution and sales,” he said.
