ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 20, 2014)-- During July, nine-liter spirits case sales in the control states were up 5.3% compared to same period sales last year despite a modestly tough comp. Rolling-twelve month volume growth of 1.9% was nearly flat with June’s 1.8%. Idaho, Montgomery County Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, and Wyoming reported monthly growth rates exceeding their twelve month trends.
Control state spirits shelf dollars grew 8.0% during July while trending at 4.5% during the past twelve months. Idaho, Montgomery County Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming reported growth rates exceeding their twelve month trends.
Price/Mix for July is 2.7%, up slightly from June’s 2.5%.
July’s Control State spirits sales as reported appear robust. However, consider:
- Michigan, with 16% of the Control States’ spirits and dollars volumes, reported five weeks of sales during this July against four weeks last year (21.2% increase reported), artificially inflating sales and skewing Control States results. Michigan had seven more selling days during this year’s July than last year’s.
- After normalizing nine-liter spirits case sales, July’s volumetric growth is 1.7%, and rolling twelve month volumes are up 1.5%. Likewise, after normalizing shelf dollars, July’s control states shelf dollar growth rate is 4.0% with a twelve-month trend of 4.1%.
- July’s normalized Price/Mix is 2.3%.
During July, Irish Whiskey, with 0.9% share of the control states spirits market, was the fastest growing category with 15.1% reported and a twelve month trend of 10.0%. Vodka, with 33% share, grew during the same periods at 6.1% and 1.9%. All categories (Brandy/Cognac, Canadian Whiskey, Cocktails, Cordials, Domestic Whiskey, Gin, Irish Whiskey, Rum, Scotch, Tequila, and Vodka) grew at rates exceeding their twelve-month trends.
July’s nine-liter wine case sales growth rate was 1.0%. Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Utah, Mississippi, Montgomery County Maryland, and Wyoming reported 0.7%, -2.1, 0.4%, 5.4%, 10.9%, and 6.3%, respectively. Rolling-twelve month wine volume growth was 1.7%, down from June’s 2.0%.
