Community Guide on Preventing Excessive Alcohol Consumption

From 2006-2012, the Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF), a non-federal, independent panel of public health and prevention experts, conducted a systematic review of the scientific evidence on the effectiveness and efficacy of evidence-based policy interventions to prevent excessive alcohol consumption. The CPSTF is supported by staff from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Like the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force which is a panel of experts who make health-related recommendations for an individual (e.g., how frequently an individual should get a mammogram or a colonoscopy), the CPSTF makes recommendations on environmental factors known to impact community health, such as preventing excessive alcohol consumption.

Community Guide

The CPSTF made seven key recommendations, including limiting location, hours and days of alcohol sales, providing liability for illegal alcohol sales, increasing alcohol taxes, conducting alcohol compliance checks and maintaining government control of alcohol sales (privatization of alcohol sales).
