During February nine-liter control states spirits case sales grew 4.7% over same period sales last year. Iowa(9.0%), Idaho(5.0%), Montgomery County Maryland(0.2%), Michigan(9.6%), Montana(6.9%), North Carolina(5.8%), Ohio(5.3%), Oregon(4.0%), Pennsylvania(2.3%), Virginia(4.2%), Vermont(2.7%), and West Virginia(6.1%) each reported a monthly growth rate for February exceeding its twelve-month trend. Alabama(1.5%), Maine(0.6%), Mississippi(-0.6%), New Hampshire(2.9%), Utah(5.0%), and Wyoming(2.7%) grew at rates that fell short of matching their twelve-month trends. Control state rolling-twelve-month volume growth, 3.7%, was up from January’s reported 3.4%. Spirits volumes have grown 7.7% year-to-date compared to 1.9% a year ago.

Control state spirits shelf dollars were up 7.7% during February while trending at 6.7% during the past twelve months. Iowa(7.7%), Idaho(7.6%), Michigan(14.2%), Montana(9.1%), North Carolina(10.0%), Ohio(9.1%), Oregon(7.0%), Pennsylvania(4.5%), Virginia(7.1%), Vermont(5.8%), and West Virginia(6.8%) reported growth rates exceeding their twelve-month trends. Alabama(4.2%), Montgomery County Maryland(1.0%), Maine(2.1%), Mississippi(0.6%), New Hampshire(5.1%), Utah(6.8%), and Wyoming(4.9%) grew shelf dollars at rates below their twelve-month trends. Shelf dollars in the control states are up 10.5% year-to-date compared to 4.3% last year-to-date.

February’s rather robust nine-liter case and shelf dollar growth rates were at least partially effected by modest comps. Note that year-to-date growth rates are artificially inflated by January’s control states reporting-calendar anomalies.

Price/Mix for February is 3.0%, improving upon January’s 2.5%. 

Tequila, with 6% share of the nine-liter case control states spirits market, was February’s fastest growing category with 12.3% reported and a twelve-month trend of 10.3%. Cocktails, with 2% share, reported 12.1% growth and an 8.1% twelve-month trend. Vodka, with 35% share, grew during the same periods at 3.8% and 3.3%, respectively. Brandy/Cognac(4.3%), Canadian Whiskey(3.2%), Cocktails(12.1), Cordials(4.0%), Domestic Whiskey(7.6%), Gin(1.0%), Scotch(5.4%), Tequila(12.3%), and Vodka(3.8%) grew at rates above their twelve-month trends, while Irish Whiskey(10.4%) and Rum(0.6%) grew at rates below theirs.

February’s nine-liter wine case sales growth rate was 0.7%. Pennsylvania (reporting 1.4% nine-liter case growth for wines), New Hampshire (-1.9%), Utah (3.1%), Mississippi (-1.2%), Montgomery County Maryland (-2.5%), and Wyoming (3.0%) are the control states that are the sole wholesalers of wines and spirits within their geographical boundaries. Rolling-twelve-month wine volume growth in these six control states was -0.7%, improving upon January’s reported -0.9%.
